Humbuggery


Humbuggery (HUHM-buhg-uh-ree) Noun: -Language, behavior, or ideas that are absurd and contrary to good sense. -Something intended to deceive; a hoax or fraud. -A person who claims to be other than what he or she is; an impostor. -Nonsense; rubbish. -Pretentious behavior or attitudes. Humbuggery entered English in the 1820s and stems from the earlier term humbug, which is of uncertain origin. Used in a sentence: “... nobody might ever have found out that it was the confoundedest, brazenest, ingeniousest piece of fraud and humbuggery that was ever concocted to fool poor confiding mortals with!” -Mark Twain, Life on the Mississippi, 1883
